  4. Add at least 25% for phones, downloads, calls and Wi-Fi variation.

Example: two HD screens and one 4K screen equal 60 Mbps before headroom. Multiplying by 1.25 produces a sensible target near 75 Mbps.

Why a fast plan can still buffer

Your internet package describes access capacity, not the quality of every Wi-Fi connection. A television behind two thick walls can receive a weak signal even when a phone beside the router reports excellent speed. Packet loss, interference, background downloads and an overloaded device can interrupt playback without reducing the headline plan speed.

Test correctly

Run a speed test on the streaming device when possible, in the room where it is used, during the time you normally watch. Repeat the test three times. Then compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. One isolated result is less useful than a repeatable pattern.

Ethernet, 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz?

  • Ethernet: normally the most consistent choice for a fixed television or box.
  • 5 GHz Wi-Fi: usually faster at short range, but walls reduce it more quickly.
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi: reaches farther, but often faces more interference and offers less capacity.

Do more connections require more speed?
